  18. It is possible to set up an icon and a shortcut key to activate a
  19. screen saver in Windows NT, similar to Windows 3.1 and Windows for
  20. Workgroups.
  21.  
  22. NOTE: If you set up a Windows NT screen saver to activate from an icon
  23. or a shortcut key, the password protection option will not be active
  24. if the screen saver is activated in this manner even though the
  25. password option may be enabled in the Desktop dialog box of Control
  26. Panel.

  28. In Windows 3.1 and Windows for Workgroups, it is possible to have
  29. password protection regardless of the way a screen saver is activated.
  30. However, because of the Windows NT security model, password protection
  31. for a screen saver will only be active when the screen saver is
  32. started because the timeout period has expired.

  37. To activate a screen saver from an icon or shortcut key, use the
  38. following procedure:
  39.  
  40. 1. Open the Registry Editor (REGEDT32.EXE) from the Administrative
  41.    Tools group.
  42.  
  43.    WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious,
  44.    system-wide problems that may require you to reinstall Windows NT
  45.    to correct them. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems
  46.    resulting from the use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use this
  47.    tool at your own risk.

  49. 2. Use the following path:
  50.  
  51.       HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
  52.       \Windows
  53.  
  54. 3. Select the Programs value and then choose String from the Edit
  55.    menu.
  56.  
  57. 4. Add the 'scr' extension to the string as follows:
  58.  
  59.       Programs: REG_SZ: exe com bat pif cmd scr
  60.  
  61. 5. Choose OK, close the Registry editor, and log off from Windows NT.
  62.  
  63. 6. Log back on to Windows NT, and from the Program Manager window,
  64.    choose New from the File menu and then select Program Item.
  65.  
  66. 7. Use any Description and on the Command Line, add the path and
  67.    filename for a Screen Saver (SCR) file.

  69.       Example:  C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\SSBEZIER.SCR /S
  70.  
  71.    The /S switch forces the screen saver to start immediately. Remove the
  72.    /S to display a setup screen.
  73.  
  74. 8. If desired, add a shortcut key to start the screen saver from a
  75.    keystroke combination. 
  76.  
  77.    NOTE: Program Manager must be active for the shortcut keys to work.

  79. 9. Choose OK and you will now be able to activate a screen saver
  80.    with the icon or a shortcut key.
